My husband and I have spent our retirement camping across the country. We walk our dog and ride our bikes every day. I knew my hips were getting worse when I couldn’t walk as far and found myself beginning to avoid activities I love. When I came to see Dr. Mennerick, I had to hobble a few steps each time I stood up. We took x-rays and found that my joints showed significant wear and tear from my years as a dancer. I wanted to avoid surgery for as long as possible. Dr. Mennerick helped stretch and strengthen the muscles around my hips. She helped me find a yoga class that was perfect for me. Although we can’t change the degeneration in my joints, Dr. Mennerick has given me several more surgery free years to enjoy!
Ready for the Race
It was two weeks before my marathon. I know I should have come in sooner, but I thought my knee pain would go away with a little extra stretching. I wasn’t sure there was anything she could do but Dr. Mennerick said it was worth taking a look. At my appointment, she watched me walk and noticed I wasn’t using my ankle properly. She checked my ankle muscles and found weakness. She was able to show me the right stretches to do and helped me regain the strength I needed to support my ankle. I was amazed at how quickly my knee pain disappeared with such a simple, targeted approach! She understood how important this race was for me. Instead of telling me I shouldn’t run, she worked with me to get me to the race.
Fatigue and Stomach Pains
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with celiac disease, a condition that wreaks havoc on my intestines because of a severe reaction to gluten. Although I had been on a strict gluten-free diet, I still had trouble with stomach pain, low energy, thinning hair, headaches, and other problems. It was so severe that I had to stop seeing clients in my own business, and my husband and I had put our dream of having more children on hold until I could get my own health under control. Dr. Mennerick worked patiently with my apprehension of trying new foods and vitamins. She wanted to get hard data to work with, so she ran basic blood work, as well as a specialized stool test. The tests showed that I was anemic, and I had too few good bacteria in my body which made me more prone to an overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast. With the high-quality vitamins and natural formulas that Dr. Mennerick had in her office, we were able to balance things without drugs. She helped me heal, and this year, we welcomed our new baby boy!
Allergies Controlling My Life
I have suffered from allergies for years. I’ve tried all the over the counter medications, but I didn’t like how they made me feel. It was hard to concentrate at work. My sinuses were always stuffed up and food had lost its taste. My voice had become so nasally that I didn’t sound like myself. I was miserable every day. My neighbor told me about an allergy test that Dr. Mennerick could do in her office. This test only required a blood draw instead of the test that pricks up and down your arms. I was shocked when she showed me my results! My body was over-reacting to some of the foods I ate every day–no wonder I felt so bad! It was so good to know that I wasn’t crazy; we had found the answer. Dr. Mennerick helped me navigate finding new foods and taught me ways to cook without the reactive foods. It took some work on my part, but it was worth the effort. Since I avoided my reactive foods for the time she recommended, I can now have those foods occasionally without any trouble.
Low Back Pain
I hurt my back years ago when I was a college athlete, but it has continued to bother me throughout my adult life. When I was in grad school, I would have to lay on the floor in the back of the room to relieve the pain. I had started gaining weight because I wasn’t able to work-out as much. When I came to see Dr. Mennerick a few years ago, I now had a wife and baby girl in my life, but my back pain lingered and would sometimes keep me in bed for a couple of days- not a great way to spend the weekend with my family. Dr. Mennerick found imbalances in the muscles of my low back, stomach, and legs that were adding to the problem. She was able to teach me not to be scared of my back. I learned that having good endurance in my muscles was better than having a “strong” back. I had no idea that that the abdominal crunches and back extension exercises I was doing at the gym were actually making the problem worse! I’m so glad I made the decision to come when I did because now I can move without fear. Check out this video:
