McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT)

“The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) is an internationally acclaimed method of assessment and treatment for spinal and extremity pain developed by New Zealand Physiotherapist Robin McKenzie. It has been widely used all over the world for more than 30 years.

MDT clinicians are trained to assess and diagnose all areas of the musculoskeletal system. That means that if a problem exists in or around the spine, joint or muscle, an MDT evaluation may be appropriate.

MDT is a philosophy of active patient involvement and education that is trusted and used by clinicians and patients all over the world for back, neck and extremity problems. This approach continues to be one of the most researched physical therapy based methods available.

A key feature is the initial assessment – a safe and reliable way to reach an accurate diagnosis and only then make the appropriate treatment plan. Expensive tests such as MRI’s are often unnecessary. Certified MDT clinicians are able to rapidly determine whether the method will be effective for each patient.

In its truest sense, MDT is a comprehensive approach based on sound principles and fundamentals that, when fully understood and followed, is very successful.”

Chiropractic Care and Rehab

Cycle Route Sign

It has been documented that chiropractic adjustments restore motion to a joint but bones are not moved for this to happen. Motion nourishes the joint, reduces local muscle spasm, and stimulates the body’s repair systems. Numerous studies have shown the safety, efficacy, and patient satisfaction associated with chiropractic treatments. Low back pain, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, infant colic, and menstrual pain have all been successfully treated in control studies supporting the effectiveness of chiropractic manipulative therapies.

Nutrition and Functional Medicine

One of the greatest factors dictating overall health is nutrition. We offer both in-office and phone consultations for diet and nutritional concerns. Whether you are living with a condition like high blood pressure or rheumatoid arthritis, you are an athlete trying to better your work-outs and competition, or you are a over-weight and over-stressed type-A personality trying to find balance, Dr. Mennerick will review your history and help you work toward your goals. Based on that conversation, Dr. Mennerick may order blood work or review any recent blood work you had performed at another doctor’s office. This allows her to detect common vitamin or mineral deficiencies and make targeted recommendations for supplements that would be most effective for you as well as gives us a base-line measurement. She may ask you to keep a food diary over the course of a week to see trends in the foods you may or may not be eating.

When it comes to diet, we recommend the Paleo-Mediterranean Diet as a basis for nearly all of our patients. We use an approach that focuses on small changes that fit within your goals and lifestyle. We live this way ourselves, so the recommendations are formed on both science and experience. Dr. Mennerick strives to find ways to make food fun, convenient, and full of nourishment.

We carry a full line of vitamins and supplements from Perque Integrative Health. We have carefully chosen these because of their high potency, lack of fillers and dyes, and pharmaceutical grade quality. Many patients find they respond very quickly after beginning these supplements and find themselves wondering what exactly was in their old vitamins!

Allergy and Lab Testing

“Allergy testing with the ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies is one of the most rewarding services we offer at Trillium Health & Wellness,” according to Dr. Erika Mennerick. The test covers foods, additives, preservatives, environmental chemicals (i.e. pesticides), and molds, and is performed via blood draw. The results are presented in an easy to understand format with assistance in implementing changes into your diet. This test is helpful for chronic allergy sufferers and those with skin conditions like unexplained rashes, eczema, or psoriasis, auto-immune disease, frequent illness or low immune resistance, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and digestive problems like Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well as general abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. This test is a great way to figure out what is triggering inflammation in the body.

ELISA/ACT Lymphocyte Response Assay (LRA) is different from a pick test (RAST test) because it looks for reactions that take several hours up to a few day in order for the reaction to build enough to show symptoms. The LRA is also more advanced than a simple IgG test which can have a large number of false-positive reactions; IgG tests cannot delineate between protective and reactive immunoglobulins. A prick test (pricking the arm or back and waiting 20 minutes for a skin reaction) only looks for immediate allergies (IgE) and misses delayed reactions (except for IgG4, a small percentage of reactions). Because the ELISA/ACT LRA is done via blood draw, it can be performed on patients as young as 2 years old.

An initial exam is required to determine which test is most appropriate for your condition and to provide you with the test preparation instructions. Those with an auto-immune diagnosis or significant chronic illness can expect to require more extensive testing than those with new conditions or mild symptoms. To view the list of included items for each panel click ELISA ACT Test Panels.
